STA163: 'Football: Training Female Athletes as Females' with special guest Michelle Lyons

This month on the podcast we’ve had RUGBY, we’ve had TENNIS, and now we turn our attention to FOOTBALL, specifically Women’s Football. Special guest Michelle Lyons, Women's Health Physio & creator of celebratemuliebrity.com, talks to us about her recent visit to FIFA Women's World Cup in Sydney, as part of a collaborative group of multidisciplinary professionals working together to produce the 'FIFA Women’s Health Report' to improve the landscape of female specific strategies to help female footballers.

Michelle discusses important reasons for the differences in prevalence & type of injuries between female and male football players, and how seeing the menstrual cycle as a 'super power' as opposed to a 'curse' is vital in order to encourage females to stay in sport and reach their full potential.

STA162: 'Tennis: 24 Years at Wimbledon' with special guest Steve Bedford

After two episodes related to rugby, we now turn our attention to TENNIS, and with 24 years of Sports Therapy at Wimbledon under his belt, who better to talk with than special guest Steve Bedford. 

As well as working at every Wimbledon tennis championships since 1999, Steve Bedford has also worked at all of the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 in London, spent 2 seasons with Arsenal football club (2008-10) and 2022-2023 with Brentford FC. He has lectured at a number of UK universities and has authored the books 'Sports Performance Massage', 'Recovery from Strenuous Exercise' and 'Muscular Cramp in Athletes'.

In this episode of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, Steve shares with us details of his journey since qualifying in Swedish Massage in 1995 and shows how if you put yourself out there & work hard at the beginning, the sky is the limit.

STA160: ’Breathwork for Head Trauma’ with special guest David Jackson

In this episode of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, former professional rugby player David 'Jacko' Jackson discusses how efficient functional breathing using the nose instead of the mouth can be key in not just recovery from brain injury but also improving athletic performance. 

With 316 appearances for Nottingham RFC, and 102 tries across a career of 13 years, David 'Jacko' Jackson was forced to retire in 2013 due to ‘TBI’ - Traumatic Brain Injury. Re–training as a Strength & Conditioning Coach, David co-founded the School of Calisthenics, became a Master Instructor with the Oxygen Advantage, and founded ProBreathwork.com.

In this episode, Jacko talks about his incredible journey, and explains how as soft tissue therapists we can help educate our clients to improve breathing for performance.
